Infusionsoft has become the gold standard in automated content marketing for small and mid-size businesses over recent years.  However, people still wonder why they should switch from their tried-and-true email autoresponder to a more complex platform. To help answer that question, let’s take a look at two of the major players in marketing automation and do an Infusionsoft vs. MailChimp comparison.

MailChimp – Easy Peasy (But Limited Functionality)

mail chimp

Many small businesses use MailChimp because they can get essentially what they “need” for free (or for a low monthly fee) with the service. MailChimp branding, however, comes standard with these freebie accounts. People also (wrongly) assume that MailChimp’s features differ from other platforms like Constant Contact, AWeber, etc. Most email-only marketing clients offer you unlimited lists, social integration and forms for your website. They also offer bare bones tracking and Google analytics.

All these freebies are great, but settling on a limited (albeit cheap) platform can cost your business in terms of marketing effectiveness.

For one, with your MailChimp account you can only send emails to one of your lists at a time.  Which means you can’t automate multiple lists and multiple campaigns targeting specific contacts in your list. This can make it nearly impossible to really dig deep into your client base and target the right buyers with the right offer based on their behavior.

The other major problem with MailChimp is integrating with a CRM.  This integration is, in a word: difficult. We have yet to encounter a CRM that plays well with MailChimp. It’s a clunky solution if you use a CRM for your sales team.

For someone just starting out with a newsletter, MailChimp is a simple and easy solution. If you’re looking to connect your message with the actions and preferences of your clients and prospects, then you need much more.  That requires a CRM, real time behavioral campaign sequences, e-Commerce capabilities, etc. MailChimp just doesn’t make the grade compared to Infusionsoft when it comes to these core marketing automation functions.

So, What About Infusionsoft?

Email & Marketing Automation Services

Infusionsoft’s complete CRM integrates everything you need to run fully automated behavioral marketing campaigns, sell products and services, collect payments, etc.. Infusionsoft gives you the ability to focus on the bigger picture – growing your business through a marketing funnel that will generate revenue and better ROI long term. With Infusionsoft in your back pocket, the possibilities are endless, and the outcomes can be greater.

One of the challenges with Infusionsoft is coming up to speed on its vast functionality. Learning and getting the most out of the platform requires an investment of time and money.  It’s not as simple as learning a basic campaign planner — you need to learn sequences, goals, timers, tasks, action sets, tags and more.  Infusionsoft vs. MailChimp in this respect is not really a comparison, since we’re talking about a lot more functionality with Infusionsoft.  The main thing to understand is that Infusionsoft is a more sophisticated platform that requires more investment to get the most from.

Is Infusionsoft a big step to get started? Of course. Any time we retool the way we do things, it takes time, effort and sweat. But investing in Infusionsoft can alleviate a lot of problems (including a few you didn’t know you had).  It helps generate more leads and sales, repeat customers and stronger over all performance than MailChimp.  If you’re ready to make that sort of commitment, then it’s well-worth the effort.

The Bottom Line?

MailChimp acts more as an email auto-responder or newsletter automaton software and does a great job at these two things. Otherwise, its functionality for automated marketing is limited and requires a lot of API integrations to build a complete marketing automation solution.

Infusionsoft, while more complex out of the box, offers more behavioral campaign capabilities, a CRM, eCommerce, CustomerHub, a good open API and other functionality. It has full suite support (you can call Infusionsoft Support and get a decent answer on pretty much anything).  If you’re willing to make the up-front investment, it will carry your business through from lead inception to engagement to initial sale to repeat customer in a cohesive way.
